In 1780 Dr. Gilbert Blane, a recent graduate of Glasgow's medical school, became personal physician to Admiral Sir George Rodney, British Navy. He had read Dr. Lind's books where he proved that scurvy was prevented by oranges and lemons but which the British Navy had rejected. With the support of the Admiral he was able to introduce fruit into the seamen's diet. He wrote "every 50 oranges or lemons, might be considered as equivalent to a hand of the fleet as it would save the life of a sailor." Because the sailors were much healthier the British Navy won the Battle of the Saints near St. Lucia in 1782. Blane became known as the father of naval medicine. By 1800 British sailors were given fruit as part of their diet. This prevented Napoleon from invading Great Britain. The French navy could not stand out to sea ore than a few days or weeks before they became so sick they had to return to port while the British Navy could stay in action many months.

One would think that England would honor vitamin C forever because of the important role it played in its history. But neither England, nor the United States nor Canada nor any English speaking countries have recognized the important role this absolutely essential nutrient played in its history and still plays in lack of the health of their peoples. No diet will ever provide enough vitamin C for optimum health. There is enough to prevent scurvy which is a state of poor health. For really good health we need optimum amounts of vitamin C. This was emphasized by Dr. Irwin Stone and later Dr. Linus Pauling.

Shortly after vitamin C became available in pure form enterprising doctors knowing how safe it was began to experiment with it. These were ideal experiments because it is impossible to harm anyone with vitamin C and the benefit is enormous. During the Golden Age of vitamin discovery between 1930 and 1940 vitamins were looked upon as exciting nutrients which played an enormous role in treating disease and maintaining health. Unfortunately in 1950 our medical schools dropped all vitamins from the curriculum on the false belief that the tiny amounts present in foods were adequate. The professions trusted the government agencies who insisted that if everyone followed government recommendations and food rules no one would be sick. I do not want to enter this touch and totally erroneous belief. As a result, almost all the excellent clinical reports that were published in medical journals have been forgotten and are ignored by MedLine, the chief enforcer of censorship in modern medical science.

This is why this little volume is so terribly important. The Internet does contain much more co9mplete references to those papers, but it will be most valuable for all the people interested in health to have on hand copies of the major early reports. They were not double blind and this is a good thing. Double blinds considered the holy write by the church we call medicine are highly overrated. The best parts of modern medicine were built upon these kind of clinical anecdotes.

Did you know that polio would never have been a problem if everyone had had enough vitamin C? Dr. Jungeblut (1935) reported that the polio virus was inactivated by crystalline vitamin C. Dr. IJ Kligler also showed it decreased toxin production by C. diptheria (1936). In 1949 Dr. FR Klenner, starting in the mid 1940s, successfully treated many viral disesases including polio, herpes, chicken pox, influenza, measles, mumps and pneumonia with large intravenous doses of this innocuous nutrient. Thirteen of the Klenner papers are republished here. Dr. Klenner considered it an antibiotic against viruses and of course it is but as it could not be patented no company was interested in selling or advertising it.

The last paper in this book by Robert Llandwehr describes the official reaction tot his very important information.

Suppose we lived in a rational world with a logical patent system so that all safe therapeutic compounds would be patented or so that none of them would be patented. Today vitamins cannot be patented nor can the sale of vitamins be accompanied by a description of their therapeutic properties. But suppose our governments were intelligent enough to allow all safe nutrients to be sold freely and with the correct information about their therapeutic properties. Think of the millions of people who could have been saved. Think of the millions who died from influenza. We would no longer have to be worried about the next major flu epidemic which everyone predicts will certainly come and for which we are all warned we must have the vaccines. The vaccines are considered very valuable but anyone who reads Tim O'Shea's book "The Sanctity of Human Blood: Vaccination is Not Immunization" Eighth Edition, will want many questions to be answered honestly by those who maintain that the vaccines have been helpful. Had the information about vitamin C's antiviral effects been applied we would not have had to depend upon the vaccines and in the process overloaded children with toxic thiomerosal which is still present in too many vaccines. Fortunately, some places are legislating against the use of these very toxic chemical against the opposition of the establishment of vaccine manufacturers and the agencies that work hand in hand with them in perpetuating their use.

Read this little book and weep, for the enormous and tragic loss of health and lives.
